If you’re going to splash the words “BREAK THE INTERNET” across your
print magazine cover, you better be able to provide sufficient goods to
support that claim. And, in the case of the dual covers of Paper magazine featuring Kim Kardashian
that hit the ’net last night, accompanied with such a promise, they, we
would assess, certainly delivered (even if the Internet did not, you
know, technically break).
In one of the images, Kim is seen baring her world-famous
behind—shined and polished to an extreme extent—while in the other she
is opening a bottle of champagne which sprays behind her into a glass
resting on her derriere. These images were shot by Jean-Paul Goude,
the renowned French artist famous for his shots of Grace Jones (and the
Kim champagne shot is an homage to Goude’s “Champagne Incident” work).
Kardashian tweeted the images, along with the amusing message, “And they say I didn't have a talent...try balancing a champagne glass on your ass LOL.” Adorably, Kim’s husband, Kanye West, also posted the cover, with the caption “#ALLDAY.” While some—like Glee star Naya Rivera—bristled at the provocative shots, the general Internet sentiment seemed to be one of bemused appreciation. Lorde, in one of the best responses, reposted the photo with the word “mom” (the singer just released
a collaboration with West). Meanwhile, as Kris Jenner orders
poster-size copies for every room of her house, and as Paris Hilton
decides to turn off her phone for the rest of the day, it seems obvious
that—as the parodies and memes have already emerged—the “The View Hosts Get in Heated Debate over Kim Kardashian’s Paper Magazine Covers” headlines will emerge in the next few days, the “Grandmas React to Kim’s Paper
Magazine Covers” video will hit next week, and the “Seth Rogen and
James Franco Re-Create the Kim K Covers” images will come out shortly
after that: if not, then we will know the Internet really is broken.
